Quotes

“I think that it is not exaggerated to say that no other educational system in the world gives such a central role to the arts as the Waldorf School Movement. There is not a subject taught that does not have an artistic aspect. Even mathematics is presented in an artistic fashion and related via dance, movement or drawing to the child as a whole. Steiner’s system of education is built on the premise that art is an integral part of human endeavors. He gives it back its true role. Anything that can be done to further his revolutionary educational ideals will be of the greatest importance.”

Dress & General Appearance

All-Weather Clothing

All students, from youngest to oldest, should come prepared for rain or shine. Outdoor activities are a major part of the daily schedule. Rain gear and cold weather gear (boots, gloves, hats and snow pants for the younger children) are essential. Children in the Early Childhood program and Grades 1-3 must keep an extra set of clothes in the classroom for emergencies.

Grade School

• Students must come each day covered from shoulder to mid-thigh.
• Gym shoes are the best choice for footwear.
• If a skirt is worn, there should be shorts underneath.
• Pants and shirts of flexible breathable natural fiber are best for free movement.
• Each student who chooses fashion over function in his or her dress detracts from the lesson. Such clothing affects individual participation and group progress. Clothing that detracts from any lesson will be dealt with at each teacher’s individual discretion and in an age-appropriate manner.

Inappropriate wardrobe choices include, but are not limited to the following:

• Ripped and/or torn clothing.
• T-shirts with overly large writing, media or violent images.
• Excessively baggy clothing.
• Exposed underwear.
• Excessively tight clothing.
• Revealing clothing, including midriff-baring shirts, spaghetti straps and short skirts.
• Excessively large, overly ornate or quantities of jewelry.
• Flip-flops or foam-type clogs.
• Any inappropriate or distracting clothing.
• Hats inside the building.
• Extreme hairdos, including mohawks.
• Dyed hair (any color).
• Use of makeup, nail polish or colored lip-gloss.
• Piercings anywhere besides the lobes of the ears.
• Writing or drawing on their own or another person’s skin.

Consequences to students who make inappropriate choices in dress or appearance may range from reminders to suspension, at the discretion of the teacher.

High School

• Students are expected to dress in a way that contributes to a healthy social environment and an academic atmosphere.
• Students should dress appropriately for our school which includes Early Childhood and Grade School students.
• Students should be clean, neat and well-groomed.
• Dress should be discreet and allow for a full range of activities including Eurythmy, drama and physical education.
• Excessively baggy or revealing clothing is not allowed.
• No halter tops, belly shirts, strapless tops, spaghetti strap shirts, muscle shirts, short shorts or short skirts, visible underwear, sleepwear, swimwear.
• Appropriate footwear must be worn at all times.
• Hats, caps, hoods, sunglasses, etc., are not acceptable inside the school building and may be worn only with the permission of the teacher.
• Clothing and/or jewelry with symbols related to drugs, alcohol, sex, violence and/or media images are prohibited.
• Piercing of the tongue or mouth is not allowed. The wearing of jewelry in other pierced areas is subject to the teacher’s discretion.

Festival Attire – Grade School & High School

Although sturdy clothing is best for school, special occasion dress is required for the festivals and performances held at the school. The faculty will designate in advance how students should be dressed for each event.

Movement Classes Attire – Grade School & High School

For safety, hygiene and freedom of movement, students must dress properly for movement classes. For gym class, students in grades 6-12 must bring a complete change of clothing, including athletic shoes, shorts or sweat pants, and a plain T-shirt. Eurythmy class requires comfortable clothing that is easy to move in. Students who are not dressed properly will not be able to participate. Lack of participation will impact the student’s evaluation.

Symbols/Imagery – Grade School & High School

Clothing or jewelry with symbols related to alcohol, drugs, sex, violence or media-oriented imagery are prohibited. Students will be requested to remove jewelry or change clothing and are expected to cooperate.

Lost & Found/ Stolen Items

If you are missing something, check the Lost and Found box located in the west entryway hall on the first floor or in the wooden box in the Early Childhood wing. The school is not responsible for replacing or reimbursing students and their families for lost or stolen items.
