we have rolled up the red carpet…

WE have rolled up the red carpet and put away our high heels or high tops and hung our gowns or red leather jeans back into the closet. The Auction is over.

WE had a strong and dedicated Auction team for the last 10 months. From sewing table cloths to loading trucks, the core
Auction team hung in until the clock struck 4am on Auction eve.

WE had 100% participation from our administrators, faculty, and school support staff.

WE had parent support. Cheered on by Auction reps, parents collected over 350 items to be auctioned off the night of the Red Carpet Gala.

WE had participation — over 400 people attended the event.

WE had involvement. The 8th grade class helped load the Auction truck, parents pulled together baskets and the school support staff proof read and helped organize Auction items.

WE had fun. We laughed, cried, and had many silly moments.

WE raised funds. The final count is not in yet.

WE had partnership. Parents, Faculty, the Board of Trustees, the College of Teachers, Administrators and School support team all supported this event.

Waldorf Education. It takes WE to make it work. WE the parents, WE the teachers, WE the Administrators, WE the College, WE the students.

WE offer our heartfelt thanks!

Big Auction Hugs,

-Chad, Daina, Jamie, Katybeth, Mary Jo, Shannon

circus club

Please be aware that all students are expected to go directly from their classrooms to the gym at dismissal time on days when
they are participating in Circus Club. Students are not allowed to go to New Leaf or outside. Please remember to pack your
children an extra snack, which they will be allowed to eat after school on the side of the gym. We are unable to monitor
children outside or across the street, and we need to begin class promptly for all participants.

The Chicago Waldorf School cannot be responsible for supervising extra children during Circus Club. Siblings, car-pool mates, friends, etc. are not allowed to wait and watch in the gym. Please make other arrangements. Children coming expecting to
watch will be sent to the Main Office, and parents or emergency contacts will be called to come pick them up. This will enable
us to responsibly supervise those children participating in the Circus Club program.

If you have any questions, please call Ms. Shaffer at 773.465.2662 ext. 8323. Thank you for your cooperation!

Parents are warmly invited to attend.

driving for dollars

Parents or legal guardians who provide transportation to and from school because free transportation is not available for their children may be eligible to receive money from the state of Illinois to help offset some of the cost. To qualify, you must live over 1.5 miles from school. This transportation reimbursement program has been in effect for some time and Waldorf parents have taken advantage of the program in the past. To apply, parents must submit claim information (social security number and claim amount or distance from home to CWS) to our office. Then we transmit it electronically to the State Board of Education. We suggest that parents interested in applying for the reimbursement come to the front office to verify eligibility.

sr project thanks

The high school and the senior class would like to thank all of the parents and friends of our community who took time to attend the senior projects last week. Your interest, supportive attention and, most of all, your thoughtful questions add gravity and meaning to this important moment of passage for our soon-to-be graduates.

Now the Class of 2007 is absent from school for two weeks on their various internships (see accompanying article), and the Class of 2008 is beginning to weigh possible topics for their projects. We hope to see you all back in twelve months’ time to hear what our new crop of seniors will have learned.

sr internships

Over the next two weeks the seniors will be out of school doing internships in a huge variety of work situations. Their placements include:

•The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC
•The Chicago Botanic Gardens in Glencoe, Illinois
•The Art Institute of Chicago
•A film studio in New York City
•The Chicago Center for Psychophysical Healing
•A wilderness survival camp in Arizona
•The Chicago Center for Neighborhood Technology
•The CWS Eurythmy Program
•A psychiatric hospital in Nashville, Tennessee
•The Poetry Foundation in Chicago

The Senior Internships are designed for the students to pursue on-the-job experiences that can give them a sense of the workplace and a chance to explore possible life paths. The students will be working 30-40 hours per week under the tutelage of an onsite mentor who will also evaluate their internship experience. We look forward to hearing about our
seniors' experiences when they return to school after the Spring Break!

you do the math!

Last week' s problem: All ages in this problem are in years. A man is three times as old as his wife was when the man was as old as his wife is now. The man is now 48. Find the present age of his wife.

The answer: the wife is 32. When the man was 32, the wife was 16 and 16 multiplied by 3 is 48. If you can' t see the answer immediately, you can do this problem algebraically by setting up a system of equations. The first statement: A man is three times as old as his wife was — so…
M = current age of man, W = current age of his wife and X = the difference in their ages.
M = 3(W — X) So 48 = 3(W — X)
The age of the man is 3 times the age of his wife minus the difference in their ages when the man was as old as his wife is now.
W = M — X so W = 48 — X

Now we have two equations and two unknowns. So plug 48 — X in for W in the first equation.
48 = 3(48 — X — X)
48 = 3(48 — 2X)
96 = —6X

As of the deadline for submission to the Bulletin on Friday, there were no correct answer submissions. Anyone who answered correctly since then will be recognized in an upcoming edition. We hope you found this an interesting problem. Here is another:

The lengths of the sides of a right triangle are all integers (whole numbers). The first side has a length that is an integral (whole number) multiple of 13, and one of the other sides has a length that is prime and is 50 more than the length of the first side. Find the smallest possible perimeter of such a triangle. (Hint: Remember the Pythagorean Theorem?)

Remember, all answers should be submitted to Andrew Starzynski or Brian Gleichauf. Happy Solving!
