School Bulletin for the Week of April 25, 2007
annual fund update
Annual Fund gifts and pledges now total $235,000. A huge thank you to all those who have already donated! Overall
current parent participation stands at 65% (see below for a breakdown by class). We do hope parents who have yet to make a contribution will consider the merits of the program and decide to participate soon. The amount of individual
contributions is not what's important. What matters is that each family participates at some level so that the outcome is a collective effort. To reach our goal we need all parents to participate. For more information or to contribute, please call
773.828.8456 or email Andrea Ragan or go to the Annual Fund Page.
There are just two months left until the close of the 2006-2007 Annual Fund campaign. This yearly fundraising program is an integral part of the school's financial picture. The charitable dollars collect by the Annual Fund help the school pay for expenses that tuition revenue alone can't cover.

The eurythmy work of students in grades 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 11 will be showcased at a festival of work on Wednesday, April 25th. There will be both a daytime performance (10: 30am) as well as an evening performance (7: 00pm). Parents of students in grades which are performing received a letter with particulars such as arrival time and appropriate attire. Note: The April 18, 2007 edition of the Bulletin inadvertently left the 8th grade out of the list of participating classes in the banner box announcement of this festival. Please be advised that the 8th grade is performing at this show of student work. The editor apologizes for any confusion or inconvenience this omission may have caused.

tent talk
It’s class trip time again and we have 4 separate classes all going out in the same week. Eeeek! On Saturday, April 28th I will be setting up CWS' full inventory of 20 tents in the gym from 10am-4pm. I am looking for helpers to come join me in getting these tents ready for our students’ trips. We will be taking inventory, inspecting the tents
and sealing them for those wet days. This is a very large project for one person to do by herself, so if you can assist me in
the process, please come! No experience is necessary and refreshments will be served. Please call me at 773.784.7914 so I
can get a count. On a related note, I am also looking to borrow some camping stoves. We usually don't have 4 classes going out at once, so we are a little low on stock! I would prefer propane 2 burner stoves, but will take propane 1 burner stoves as well.
Thanks in advance!

you do the math!
First I would to say that last week's answer to the previous week's problem involving the distance from Chicago to Rome was missing many figures that did not print correctly in the Bulletin due to formatting imcompatibility. We apologize for that. If you want the answer desperately, email me and I will send it to you.
Last week's problem was:
Solve for x, y and z.
3x + 2y + z = 8
x + 2y + 3z = -8
-2x + y + 2z = -12
There are many ways to solve this. One way is to subtract the second equation from the first getting rid of the y:
3x + 2y + z = 8
-(x + 2y + 3z = -8)
2x - 2z = 16
So x = 8 + z
Then substitute x into the bottom equation and it works out nicely:
-2(8 + z) + y + 2z = -12
-16 - 2z + y + 2z = -12
Therefore y = 4
Substituting y back in gives us x = 2 and z = --6.
Usually 3 equations and 3 unknowns does not work out so nicely but in this case, it did. Tiffany Ying and John Trevillion get credit for solving this problem. Nice job! Jim Lynch actually turned it into another problem which he solved so kudos go to him as well.
I hope you enjoyed that problem. Here is another problem in two parts:
a. Two cards are randomly selected from an ordinary playing deck. What is the probability that they form a blackjack? That is, what is the probability that one of the cards is an ace and the other is either a ten, a jack, a queen or a king?
b. Suppose you are playing blackjack against a dealer. In a freshly shuffled deck, what is the probability that neither you nor the dealer is dealt a blackjack?
Remember all answers should be submitted to Andrew Starzynski or Brian Gleichauf Enjoy!

After a year off, our girls' soccer team had a slow start, losing in their first three games. But they have recently pulled it together with a three game win streak. The last win over Our Lady of Tepeyac was with only 8 players on the field! The girls turned it on against Young Women's with a 3-0 win with goals scored by Adriana Kondrat, Natalie Thomas and Camila Vaca. We then were able to hole Our Lady of Tepeyac with a 1-0 win with a goal by Camila. The girls have displayed great teamwork and the ability to play different positions, with multiple people playing goalie, to pull this streak together. The team has games coming up this Thursday, 4²26 against Cristo Rey and Saturday, 4⁄28 versus Young Women's starting at 11am. They play Northtown Academy on Monday, 4⁄30 at 4:30pm.
Go Thunder!
