Let's keep the effort strong for the next 24 days and during the week remember to take time to thank a teacher, fellow parent, student, support staff or administrator for making this fund raiser possible!
Also, we are still taking personal ads for the Auction catalog through this Friday at noon!

the art & science of the snow day
How does the Chicago Waldorf School administration decide if the school will be closed for snow day? This is actually a difficult decision for administrators to make (see How Does a Snow Day Become a Snow Day? Cancelling Classes Involves Science, Guesswork and Sleepless Nights, front page Chicago Tribune, February 14, 2007). Many criteria are taken into consideration in making a decision to close school. First and foremost, we track the weather forecasts from a variety of sources. Then we look outside at odd hours to see how the storm is hitting. Sheree sets up a little weather station on her back porch which she checks it at 2, 4 and 5am to assess local accumulation. We also check with the Emergency Closing Center to see if other schools in the city of Chicago or surrounding will be closing. When we do decide to close, we email a statement to the Emergency Closing Center which triggers announcements on radio, television and internet. For a listing of stations that announce school closings, please see page 29 of the Parent Handbook. You can also set up an account through the Emergency Closing Center to receive direct e-mail notification when we close. You will also be notified through the Room Parent structure whenever there is an unscheduled school closing.

waldorf 101
The spring session of the popular Waldorf 101 course will be offered beginning March 6th. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to explore the principles that stand behind Waldorf education. The course will cover several key topics including: Steiner's picture of child development; the 12-year curriculum; the relationship between the academic and the artistic; and the spiritual nature of the human being. By developing a deeper and broader awareness of these principles, parents will have a clearer understanding of the education they have chosen for their children. Thecourse will also help parents clarify their long-term commitment to a 12-year education and promote informed decision-making. The course is essential for individuals interested in assuming a leadership position within the school. The course will meet once a week four consecutive weeks on Tuesday evenings beginning March 6th through March 27th from 7:30-9:00pm. For continuity, it would be ideal for participants to commit to all four sessions. Please RSVP to Kristin Pellicori in the Main Office at 773.465.2662.
