Quotes

“We shouldn’t ask: what does a person need to know or be able to do in order to fit into the existing social order? Instead we should ask: what lives in each human being and what can be developed in him or her? Only then will it be possible to direct the new qualities of each emerging generation into society. The society will become, what young people as whole human beings, make out of the existing social conditions. The new generation should not just be made to be what the present society wants it to become.”

social inclusion training

Kim John Payne will be returning to continue his Social Inclusion Training with the Chicago Waldorf School community. Kim John will lead two in-service days Monday-Tuesday, January 21-22 with the CWS Faculty and Staff, a one day training with the Social Inclusion Coordinating Committee on Wednesday, January 23, and a workshop with a Student Social Inclusion Committee on Thursday, January 24. We are very excited to have Kim John return to work with us on this important topic.

In addition, Kim John will present a lecture entitled The Soul of Discipline on Wednesday, January 23 at 7:30pm with refreshments at 7:00pm. The following is an excerpt from Kim’s website that describes this lecture:

A parent’s journey is filled with both precious moments and difficult situations. Our sense of how we are doing is often determined by the way in which we respond to the flashpoints of parenting. These moments will either refine or consume us.

Parenting and discipline styles have changed over the years yet often these influences flow into our family and classroom life today. It is so revealing to explore discipline styles past and present, from the old “blind obedience” to behavior modifications based on punishment and reward or even to our present day behavior affirmation, often expressed as the “good job” culture.

While these tools have their place, this presentation will set out three cumulative discipline phases. Firstly, training creative compliance for the young child, secondly, building emotional skills for the elementary age, and lastly, for the teenager, managing critical choices.

We hope you’ll join us for this presentation! Tapes of Kim John Payne’s lectures will also be available for sale at the door. You can also learn more about Kim John’s work by visiting his website.

speaker series

January is Speaker Series month! Starting next week we will host four speakers:

• Luigi Fiumara will come to CWS on Thursday, January 17th at 7:30pm.

The house we live in and the office we work in become more than just “spaces” after a point in time. They become a part of us. But today, when time and space are at premium, the finer aspects of architecture often take a backseat.

This quote describes the work of Luigi Fiumara, Lead Architect of the Visual Arts Section of the Goethaeneum. Mr. Fiumara’s work with the ideas of Living Organic Architecture is internationally known. The Chicago Waldorf School is pleased to be hosting Mr. Fiumara as part of our Speaker Series this month. All are warmly invited to attend his public lecture at 7:30pm on Thursday, January 17. His insights, expertise and practical advice will doubtless provide excellent reference points for CWS as we continue to make the house we live in a home for the future.

Future guests include:

• Kim John Payne, who will return to CWS on Wednesday, January 23rd at 7:30pm

• Douglas Gerwin, who will speak at CWS on Tuesday, January 29th at 7:30pm

• Diane Levin, who will give a public lecture co-hosted by CWS at Lake Shore School at 6:30pm on Wednesday, January 30th.

We hope you will be able to join us for one or more of these exciting offerings.

driving for dollars

Parents or legal guardians who provide transportation to and from school because free transportation is not available for their children may be eligible to receive money from the state of Illinois to help offset some of the cost. To qualify, you must live over 1.5 miles from school. This transportation reimbursement program has been in effect for some time and Waldorf parents have taken advantage of the program in the past. To apply, parents must submit social security number and claim amount or distance from home to CWS to the Front Office. This information is then submitted electronically to the State Board of Education. We suggest that parents come to the front office to verify eligibility and begin the process. Requests must be submitted no later than June 30. Contact Kristin Pellicori, Main Office Manager, with any questions.

madonna series

Members of the Rudolf Steiner Branch (4249 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago) will offer a presentation of The Madonna Series with lyre accompaniment on Saturday, January 12, at 7:30pm. In 1911, Dr. Felix Piepers, with the advice from Rudolf Steiner, worked out a suggested series of Madonna paintings, mostly by Rafael, to be used in the treatment of his patients. These paintings have been presented over the years as a kind of tonic for those with depleted energy and soulforces, as well as children and adults in need of special care. The presentation of this sequence of paintings and music can be especially useful in our lives today. Admission is free; donations are suggested. Contact Debbie Barford at 773.561.7910 for any questions or more information.
