Quotes

“I think that it is not exaggerated to say that no other educational system in the world gives such a central role to the arts as the Waldorf School Movement. There is not a subject taught that does not have an artistic aspect. Even mathematics is presented in an artistic fashion and related via dance, movement or drawing to the child as a whole. Steiner’s system of education is built on the premise that art is an integral part of human endeavors. He gives it back its true role. Anything that can be done to further his revolutionary educational ideals will be of the greatest importance.”

transition team building

The CWS Administrative Transition Team, comprised of members of the College of Teachers and the Board of Trustees, has selected Pat O'Connell to be our Transition Manager, effective Monday, June 2, 2008. Ms. O'Connell will lead the transitional management over the summer to help solidify the school's infrastructure and oversee the administrative duties in the school in preparation for the arrival of our new Administrative Director, Leukos Goodwin, who will begin his appointment mid-summer. She comes to Chicago Waldorf School via the Executive Service Corps' new Interim Executive Director program which places experienced managers in leadership roles at not-for-profit organizations to assist in periods of transition.

Ms. O'Connell, who currently consults to non-profit organizations, served 6 years as the Executive Director and Director of Operations and Project Development with Claretian Associates, a not-for-profit neighborhood development organization, and 8 years as Vice President of Operations and the Assistant Vice President for the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

The CWS Transition Team feels fortunate to have such an experienced management professional as Pat O'Connell available to assist CWS during this period of transition. Pat is pleased to be a part of such a significant and exciting time at the Chicago Waldorf School. She has heard a lot of enthusiasm expressed by the Board of Trustees, teachers, parents and staff for this new phase and is looking forward to helping to ensure a good transition.

The Chicago Waldorf School Community is deeply grateful to the school's Co-Administrators, Flora Calabrese and Sheree Moratto, for their willingness to assume administrative duties over the past two and a half years and for their continued commitment to the excellence of the Chicago Waldorf School. We recognize their outstanding contributions and appreciate their continued support during this time of change.

There are only four weeks left to give to the Annual Fund and we need your support! While we wrap up this year's Annual Fund, we are also preparing for the 2007-2008 Annual Report, which is created to celebrate the success of this school year. Each year, we acknowledge everyone who has contributed to the Annual Fund by publishing their names in our Annual Report. Attached is a printer's proof of donor names as they will appear in the 2007-2008 Annual Report. If you have made your contribution, please check your name to be certain you are listed correctly. If you have corrections, please email Kristi Richey or call her at 773.828.8456.

pto au revoir

Dear Community,

After three years as co-chair of the PTO, my term has concluded. I started out in the PTO five years ago as PTO Rep to the Board of Trustees and it has been a wonderful experience since then; challenging, frustrating, overwhelming — but always, very fulfilling. Volunteering for the PTO gave me the opportunity to learn more about my child's education which has deepened my commitment to Waldorf in a more meaningful way, to meet and volunteer with parents who share the value of this education for our children, and to commit to something in which I believe. It has also given me the opportunity to learn a great deal about how a successful school should be run and the effort and expertise it takes to establish and maintain excellence. I have learned that a school's success should never be taken for granted. I have witnessed our school evolve and have worked with the remarkable people who have been part of that evolution in part by volunteering and working many extra hours, sacrificing family and personal time to make that possible. Being the co-chair of the PTO allowed me to lead and bring new ideas to the organization, but more importantly it allowed me to speak up for a very important element of our greater community — the parents — and I now join the other parents who have held the same position previously, Mary Spalding, Dru Muskovin, and Eric Sproull, just to name a few. I have made wonderful friends; staff, teachers, Board of Trustees andparents that I would not have had the opportunity to know in the same way. My sincere thanks to our community; to the members of the PTEC; my co-chairs, Renee Wright and Katherine Rogers, Janet Zimmerman, Robin Lewis and Judy Lubin (they have been incredible!) to the PTOC and to all of the PTO Reps — you have been great.

So — what are you doing next year? How about joining the PTO?

-Cynthia Joho

5th grade thanks

The students of the 5th Grade class would like to thank everyone who supported our vendor table at the May Fair. We raised $170.52 from the sale of our handwork and your donations. We will send the money to Malaria No More, an organization working to prevent the spread of malaria in Africa. The money will be used to buy specially-treated mosquito bed nets and is enough to buy 17 nets. Each one will protect several people when they sleep, which is when most mosquito bites happen.

Thank you very much.
