social inclusion corner
If we are to ask the children and teens around us to change the way they act and speak to each other, we must be willing to explore and shift our own social behavior. The Adult Put Down Diet is a path that can lead us to becoming a more authentic adult and role model. As Gandhi put it: We must become the change we wish to see.
Changing the way we think, feel and act is only achieved in small steps and this Put Down Elimination Diet is arranged to make this possible. Begin with Right Intention. This process has three steps; each step relates to aspects of the Eight-Fold Path, a foundation of Buddhism, gleaned from Steiner's Knowledge of Higher Worlds. These steps are done consecutively over three weeks.
Week One Right Speech: Become very conscious of the put downs you use. This includes gossip and both verbal and body language put downs (eye rolling, etc. ) Be thoughtful; say only what has sense and meaning. If some thing hurtful is said, don't be afraid to apologize and reframe your words.
Week Two Right Mindfulness: Continue the work of week one with the addition of refraining from approving, disapproving or judging. This cultivates the habit of forming opinions that humanize rather than de-humanize.
Week Three Right Action: Try to intercede and shift the conversation. The DADD strategy (Disapprove & Affirm, Discover & Do-Over) is a good method. Each night for the whole three weeks, reflect on your progress. Try to do this in a self-forgiving way; exploring: what was bothering you at the time; how you might do it differently next time; what you observed in others. Do this in a non-critical way.
When we resolve to make non-violent, authentic communication a part of our daily lives, we become the change we seek. It is extraordinarily powerful when we do our part in creating a community of consciousness. Our children feel safe yet challenged to grow. All through this process of growth and change we must be willing to look at our own social habits, striving always to be worthy of imitation.

development update
We are pleased to announce we have reached the 50% mark of our financial goal for this year's Annual Fund! Thank you to all who have donated so far and helped us reach $140,000.00! Along with this exciting news, it is also time to update you on the levels of class participation, and who is in the running for the Red Velvet cake from Tweet. It looks as if the 9th grade is pulling ahead with 62% participation, with two EC classes, Mrs. Donkel's with 58% and Mrs. Bruck's with 54%, coming in behind.
And speaking of EC classes, the Annual Fund received a gift from our youngest donor last week. Ms. Nora Leonard of Mrs. Donkel's class donated money she had earned on her own to the Annual Fund in honor of Mrs. Donkel's birthday. Thank you, Nora!
If you have not yet donated to the Annual Fund or have questions about doing so, please do not hesitate to contact the Development Office or stop by to chat.
The Annual Fund is an essential part of our community, and you are an integral piece in our success. Also, don't forget that we are conducting Annual Fund visits right now, and if you would like to schedule one, please contact email Kristi Richey or call 773.828.8456.
