first in line
We are pleased to announce that next year’s 1st grade teacher will be Breanne Petersen. Ms. Petersen – or Frau as she is
sometimes familiarly known to the students – has taught German at CWS for five years and has demonstrated excellent teaching at all grade levels. When school begins in September she will have completed three of her four years in the Summer Teacher Education Program of Rudolf Steiner College in Sacramento which has been in preparation for her long-imagined shift from special subject teacher to elementary school class teacher. In addition, Ms. Petersen holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan with a double major in German and Organizational Studies.
Ms. Petersen will complete this school year as one of our German teachers. Her new responsibilities will leave a gap in our foreign language program, and she will be sorely missed by her German students. Recruitment to fill that gap has already begun.

recycling may fair
Hard to believe that it's Spring and the May Fair is just around the corner (Saturday, May 12th, 11:00am 4:00pm), but plans are already underway! The May Fair will have a recycling theme in keeping with this year's focus on recycling at CWS. One of the 'events' will be a station called Trash or Treasure hosted by Angela Allyn. Ms. Allyn has requested that as a community we collect the tubes from toilet paper and paper towels, small plastic containers (like yogurt cups) and small boxes (smaller than cereal boxes). The plastic containers must be clean. Can you help? Over the next few weeks please collect your paper tubes, small boxes and clean small plastic containers. A drop off station will be set up the week of the Fair (details to come in future issues of the Bulletin)! Thanks!

boomtown!
Fire in Boomtown was a huge hit thanks to the exceptional performances of singers⁄storytellers, Amy Lowe and Megan Wells. If you wish to have a CD copy of this award-winning performance on the Chicago Fire of 1871, you can contact Amy Lowe directly. She is willing to waive the shipping fee and deliver it directly to the school. The cost of the CD is $15. You will find more information about Amy Lowe and Megan Wells on their websites.

you do the math!
Problem #1 (two weeks ago) was answered correctly by Erik (8th Grade) from Philadelphia, our own John Trevillion and Michael Holdrege. They all submitted an answer that the woman's age was 32 although they used different methods to reach this answer. Well done!’;
Last week's problem was: The lengths of the sides of a right triangle are all integers length that is an integral (whole number) multiple of 13, and one of the other sides has a length that is prime and is 50 more than the length of the first side. Find the smallest possible perimeter of such a triangle. (Hint: Remember the Pythagorean Theorem?)
The answer is 208. One of the sides must be a multiple of 13 and another side must be this side plus 50 and also a prime number. 13 + 50 = 63 (not a prime). 26 + 50 = 76 (not a prime). 39 + 50 = 89 (this is prime).
So two sides of the triangle are 39 and 89. Now to minimize the perimeter of a right triangle, the hypotenuse must be minimized
so make 89 the hypotenuse. Using the Pythagorean Theorem,
a² + b² = c²
39² + b² = 89²
1521 + b² = 7921
b² = 6400
b = 80
39 + 80 + 89 = 208
Already some correct answers have been submitted. All of those who answered correctly will be recognized in the next Bulletin. I hope you had fun with this one. Let's try another (I gave this problem to my 8th grade math class a few weeks ago):
A conical (cone) shaped martini glass has a height of 10 cm (this is just the receptacle part of the glass, not the handle) and a width (the diameter of the rim) of 12 cm. If the glass is filled half-way to the top, what fraction of the glass is full? (Hint: You may have to look up the properties of cones).
Remember, all answers should be submitted to Andrew Starzynski or Brian Gleichauf. Happy Solving!

I work as an advisor to the Minister for the Environment (Bhutan), and my family (wife and two sons) undertake a Steiner home schooling programme (the boys previously attended a Steiner school in Australia). In June we are coming to the US on our annual leave, and the boys will be attending language camps. Vivian and I are looking for a place to stay in Chicago or thereabouts. Ideally, we would like to 'house sit' for someone, if at all possible.
I would be most grateful if you could advertise our interest to your parent community. Ideally, we need accommodation for the full month of June, and possibly for the first week of July. I have attached a photo of Vivian, Darko (13) and Ivan (11) hopefully to show that there is nothing especially abnormal about us!
In return for hospitality, we would obviously take care of whatever house we were entrusted with. We would be happy to talk about our experiences in Bhutan, and with Steiner education in Australia. Thank you for reading this far!
Regards,
Dr. David Annandale
Senior Technical Advisor
Minister for the Environment
Royal Government of Bhutan
Editor’s Note: Interested parties should email Ilene Warfield for the Annandale's contact information.
