senior projects 2008
The 12-year Waldorf curriculum has been compared to a climb up a spiral staircase inside a tall tower in which the 1st grade students enter through the ground level and wind their way upwards. Each year provides a higher window and a different perspective on the outside world, culminating in the senior year,
when the 12th grade students arrive at the summit of the tower and view the entire vista before them.
The senior year at a Waldorf school is designed to be a synthesis of the students' education and a preparation for their next step in life. The senior curriculum recapitulates the themes in the high school curriculum related to training the powers of observation, comparison and analysis. The senior year also echoes 1st grade with its picture of the whole as the faculty guides the seniors through a study of our relationship with the world around us.
One highlight of the senior year is the senior project. Towards the end of their junior year, the students select a topic for independent study. Reading and research begins during the summer months and culminates in March of the senior year with an oral presentation before classmates, teachers, friends and family. The completed project includes a research paper as well as an artistic⁄technical component. An array of the students' papers and artistic work is on display in the back of the auditorium throughout the week.
This year's seniors will present their project Tuesday-Friday, March 11-14, 2008 in the Chicago Waldorf School Auditorium (see schedule). You are warmly invited to attend the Chicago Waldorf High School's Class of 2008 Senior Project Presentations and join us in celebrating the culmination of many months of dedicated work.

deep gratitude
We acknowledge with sadness Susan Poole's decision that she will not continue teaching the 2nd grade class. Mrs. Poole has been a valued teacher and colleague in our school for many years. We are grateful for her years of dedicated service and will hold her in our hearts as she and her family take this time to care for her mother who is ill. However, we are very thankful that we will still be seeing and working together with Mrs. Poole on a regular basis.
Mrs. Poole will be continuing to serve as a mentor and we are working together to find other ways in which she can bring her gifts to our school and our community.
We want to express our gratitude to Lauri Sullivan for stepping in as a substitute for the 2nd grade over these past months and are pleased to announce that she has agreed to continue to teach the class for the remainder of the school year.
Thank you both, Mrs. Poole and Mrs. Sullivan. Thank you, too, to the 2nd grade parents for your patience and understanding.

Limited space is still available in the CWS Summer Camp 2008. Ileana Valencia, Spanish teacher at the Chicago Waldorf School for 17 years, current Chair of the Foreign Language Department and a trained teaching mentor, will lead the sessions along with two assistants.
Children will enjoy arts, nature crafts, sports, exploring the neighborhood and Sophia Garden, afternoons at the beach, free play, weekly field trips, and other age appropriate activities.
The camp is organized as a series of six 1-week sessions (June 11 — June 15; June 18 — June 22; June 25 — June 29; July 9 — July 13; July 16 — July 20; July 23 — July 27; NO CAMP July 2 — July 6).
Sign up for one or more weeks or for the entire series! $200 per week plus a $60 one-time supply fee. Participation is open to children aged 5-12, regardless of CWS enrollment status.

math team: competition update
On Saturday, February 23rd, five Waldorf high school students and two Waldorf high school math teachers took part in the regional section of the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) annual statewide competition held at Chicago State University. Michael Sanders (Senior), Annadel Melendez (Junior), Magnus Collins (Sophomore), Michele Cusi (Sophomore) and Alithea Tashey
(Sophomore) came to the south side to compete in a variety of events all involving some pretty complex math problems. Coach Gleichauf and I were optimistic about this year's competition coming in. These fine mathletes had been meeting once a week at math club since the beginning of the year and we even had two weekend sessions. We were classed in Division 1A along with three other smaller schools in the Chicagoland area.
The mathletes began with an individual written test and the subjects on the test were distributed according to their grade level. This was followed by a freshman-sophomore team competition and a junior-senior competition.
Our mathletes did very well, and in some cases, were only a few correct answers away from qualifying for the state finals, showing the other schools that CWS can play in the big league!
Next year, let's go to the state finals!
Happy solving,
-Coach Starzynski
