Quotes

”...Waldorf education remains to become better known to Americans. Other independent educational movements, much less thoroughgoing in their attempts to integrate at every level of education art, science, and an appreciation of the fully human, have curiously been given much more attention. At a time of searching and reappraisal in American education, the Waldorf Movement with its unique understanding of the education of the child and its years of teaching practice and institutional experience deserves the informed consideration of those genuinely concerned with education and the development of human wholeness.”

School Bulletin for the Week of May 16, 2007

annual fund update

There are just a few weeks left until the end of school and the close of the Annual Fund campaign. We're closing in on our goal of $245,000 and have just a handful of families in each class who haven't yet decided to participate. If you're one of those families, most likely, you've put it off or forgotten amidst all the hubbub of spring. But if you're making a conscious decision not to contribute, please let the Development Office (773.828.8456) know so that your concerns can be addressed. Remember: the Annual Fund is our collective effort to support the short and long-term health of the school.

you do the math!

Last week's problem was:
Jane travels back and forth to work along the same 20 mile route every day. In the morning she hits traffic so her average speed is only 40 mph. On her way home she averages 60 mph. What is her average speed for the entire daily commute? (Hint: Be careful…)

Ahh, the classic average speed question. It's easy to fall into the trap that Jane's average speed is 50 mph. When one steps back and looks at the problem, one sees that Jane travels an average of 40 mph for a longer period of time than she travels an average of 60 mph.

Here is the answer submitted from Jacque Harper:
Jane's average speed is 48 miles per hour. She travels 20 miles in 30 minutes and 20 miles in 20 minutes; a total of 40miles in 50 minutes. 40 miles divided by 5⁄6 (of an) hour reduces to 40 multiplied by 6⁄5 which is 8 times 6 which is 48.

Why is Jane commuting this insane distance each day?! She should arrange with her employer to telecommute at least 2⁄5 of the time, or perhaps consider moving to a location which is closer to her workplace. She will save time, money and fossil fuel⁄carbon dioxide. She will have more time to do the things she would like to do, perhaps spending it with friends or family. Good heavens, I hope that she's taking a train or something! Or at least carpooling!!!

Good answer, Jacque, although I bet you may have been one of those students who was good at taking the teacher off on tangents in class. Clay Henley and John Trevillion also submitted correct answers.

I hope you enjoyed that problem, here is another (this will be the last problem of the year but never worry, more problems will be forthcoming in the 2007-2008 school year):
A charitable lady met a poor man to whom she gave one cent more than half of what she had in her purse. The poor fellow, who
was a member of the United Mendicants' Association, managed, while tendering his thanks, to chalk the organization's sign of 'a good thing' to her clothing. As a result, she met many objects of charity as she proceeded on her journey. To the second applicant she gave 2 cents more than half of what she had left. To the third beggar she gave three cents more than half of the remainder. She now had one penny left. How much money did she start out with?

Remember all answers should be submitted to Andrew Starzynski or Brian Gleichauf Enjoy!

sounds of silence

It will be strangely quiet in the east wing starting next week. Why? Because all the high school classes will be away on their service learning trips. Each year all the high school students and many of the faculty scatter, near and far, to participate in Service Learning experiences for two weeks. This year the students will be gone beginning Monday May 21st through June 2nd. Here’s where they’re headed:
•The 9th grade will head north to Osceola, Wisconsin to work at the Community Homestead Farm.
•The 10th grade will be in the southwest in Taos, New Mexico to help transport yurts.
•The 11th grade goes east to Kimberton, Pennsylvania to work at Camphill Village.
•The seniors will be in the west at a Navajo reservation in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona.

These annual trips are part of the Waldorf high school curriculum and provide our students with an opportunity to participate in meaningful work.

The girls' coach, Ashley Grosshuesch, was named coach of the year, again in a vote of all the league coaches. What a great way to end a great season!
