may fair
May Fair is just around the corner! Saturday, May 12, from 11am 4pm. It's been a busy year but now it's time to celebrate the return of spring with dancing around the May Pole, flower crowns and all the traditions of May Fair!
Visit with friends, wipe watermelon juice from sticky chins and enjoy this year's recycling theme with the Trash or Treasure workshop (see note below), recycling themed storytelling and crafts and presentations by our faculty.
Yes, it is also Mother's Day weekend and the Fair is a perfect place to shop for a little something for your Mom with our vendors (including the CWS school store, The Four Seasons Shop). Bring the whole family and your friends, too!
May Fair Co-chairs Isabel Liss and Sara Zimmerman and Events Coordinator, Mary Jo Graden, have been working away and are asking the assistance of the entire community for the following:
For our Trash or Treasure workshop please collect:
1) paper tubes from paper towels and toilet paper
2) clean small plastic containers (like yogurt cups) and
3) small boxes (smaller than cereal boxes).
We are also looking for tape of all kinds especially masking and colorful tapes. Bring to the collection point in the main lobby the day before the Fair (no day-of drops, please).
Class assignments have been made as follows:
EC Matson Seed project with Patricia Holdrege
EC Donkel Ticket and Raffle sales
EC Hart Games and entertainment ticket taking (with EC Bruck)

Room Parents have been advised of these assigments and are asking for parent participation. Please give generously of your time. We're counting on you to help make the Fair a joyful event!
Bake for the Fair! All families are asked to bake either for the Bakery Tent (cookies, bars, muffins and other small items) or for the Cake Walk. Drop off Friday, May 11th (the day before the Fair) in the main lobby or bring them on Saturday morning.
Please join us for Flower Crown making in the lobby of the auditorium on Friday, May 11th, from right after drop-off through an hour or so after pick-up. It's easy (instruction always on hand) and fun and truly one of the very special things about the Fair!

shadow puppets come alive
The origin of the shadow play goes far back to the Emperor Wudi's (140-87BC) grief over the loss of his favorite concubine, Li. A Tao priest, Shao Weng, saw the heartbroken emperor and told him that he could bring tack Li's departed spirit. One night, the emperor opened his eyes and saw the shadow of a beautiful woman gliding across his bed curtains. He jumped up and raised the curtains, but all he could see was the full moon high in the sky. The 'vision' was a papercut shadow puppet created by Shao Weng.
Exciting developments often take place when Waldorf schools from different regions interact. This is just what has happened here as a result of Mme. Driscoll's recent visit to the Chengdu (Zhang Dou) Waldorf School in China. Mme. Driscoll's exposure to the art of shadow puppetry in Chengdu has inspired Mr. Husseini’s 7th grade class to explore this Chinese art form. The 7th grade has made their puppets with utmost respect for this ancient tradition and is now ready, proudly and with great delight, to share their work with the Chicago Waldorf School community in a series of puppet plays depicting four fairy tales and legends. Please join them in the CWS auditorium for a special cultural experience that will bring a bit of Chengdu to you! Performances this Thursday, May 3rd, at 12:45pm, Friday, May 4th, during the Grandparents' & Special Friends' Day assembly, and again Friday evening at 7:30pm.

diversity roundtable
Please join the Diversity Committee from 2-4pm on Sunday, May 20th for a Social Justice Roundtable featuring the screening of the Frontline documentary A Class Divided followed by a discussion period. A Class Divided is the sequel to the groundbreaking video Eye of the Storm. In response to the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the subsequent riots of 1968, a 3rd grade teacher from a small town in Iowa decided to give her students an experience of discrimination. Fourteen years later, the students reunite and share the impact of that lesson on their lives.

you do the math!
Last week's problem came in two parts:
a. Two cards are randomly selected from an ordinary playing deck. What is the probability that they form a blackjack? That is, what is the probability that one of the cards is an ace and the other is either a ten, a jack, a queen or a king?
This is a combination problem. There are 64 ways to make a blackjack. (Ace of Hearts)(King of Hearts), (Ace of Hearts)(King of Spades) etc. There are 16 cards that have value 10 and 4 aces. The product of 16 and 4 is 64. Now all we have to do is divide that by the total number of two-card hands which is just 52*51 (You start with 52 cards and then have 51). So we have 64/2652 = .024. But, we have to multiply this by 2 because you could have an ace as the first card OR the second card. So the probability of getting dealt a blackjack from a freshly shuffled deck is about 4.83%.
b. Suppose you are playing blackjack against a dealer. In a freshly shuffled deck, what is the probability that neither you nor the dealer is dealt a blackjack?
It's easier to calculate the probability of this by calculating the complement. In other words, calculating the probability that both have a blackjack or only one has a blackjack and then subtracting the sum of those probabilities from 1. What one must do is figure out all the possibilities for only one person having a blackjack. This involves the one person having an ace and a 10-King. Then the dealer could have an ace OR a 10-King but not both. OR the dealer may not have either one of those two cards. Adding up all of these probabilities gives us:
Probability that exactly one person has blackjack out of two: 9.3% The probability of both having a blackjack is simply (16/52)*(4/51)2(15/50)*(3/49)*2 = .18%
So the probability of neither having a blackjack is 1 -(9.3% + .18%) = 90.5%
Alas, no one has come forward to solve this one so far. Probability questions can be tricky.
I hope you enjoyed that problem. Here is another:
Find the sum of all integers (whole numbers) greater than twenty and less than one thousand whose number base five representation consists of all identical digits. Express your answer for the sum as a base ten numeral. (HINT: Recall
base-5 means that only the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 are used).
Remember all answers should be submitted to Andrew Starzynski or Brian Gleichauf Enjoy!
