Quotes

”...Waldorf education remains to become better known to Americans. Other independent educational movements, much less thoroughgoing in their attempts to integrate at every level of education art, science, and an appreciation of the fully human, have curiously been given much more attention. At a time of searching and reappraisal in American education, the Waldorf Movement with its unique understanding of the education of the child and its years of teaching practice and institutional experience deserves the informed consideration of those genuinely concerned with education and the development of human wholeness.”

development update

The countdown begins! There are only 3 weeks left in the school year, which means only 5 weeks left until the end of the 2007-2008 Annual Fund, and we still need your support! If you have yet to give, please consider giving a gift to the Annual Fund soon. Parent participation is currently at 67%, only about 20% away from our goal of 90%! We still have yet to have another class reach 100% participation and receive a Red Velvet cake as a treat. Those that are close are EC Matson, 3rd grade and 9th grade. If you have questions regarding your class standings or want to know how you can get your class involved, please stop by the Development Office and speak to Kristi Richey.

enjoying the benefits of accreditation

There are many benefits to being accredited by ISACS and therefore a member of LMAIS; free money is one of them. In the fall, Co-Administrator Sheree Moratto attended an LMAIS meeting where she heard we could apply for state money for the average daily attendance of students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. We submitted our information to ISBE and we were recently awarded a check for over $10,000! This money can be allocated for any safety supplies required by the state, such as our ice packs, defibrulator, CPR training, etc. Hopefully, we will be able to take advantage more benefits like this in the future!

focus on faculty

Michael Holdrege comes from the West. Born in California, his early years were spent in Idaho, before his family settled in Boulder, Colorado. He went to college in the late 1960s, when student activism was at its peak. During these exciting and turbulent years he served as an elected member of the Student Government at Colorado State University, and later on the Student Senate at the University of Minnesota, from which he graduated in 1969.

After a short foray into team teaching as a member of the Teacher Corps in a
‘school without walls’, Mr. Holdrege returned to Boulder — which at that time was a hot bed of the ‘free school movement’ — and met for the first time the ideas of Rudolf Steiner and Waldorf Education. Inspired by what he found there, he pursued the professions of car salesman (unsuccessfully) and construction worker (successfully) in order to finance the next step in his education: a year at Emerson College in Sussex, England.

Returning to Colorado, he re-entered the world of construction — moving from pipe-layer to crew foreman in a year and a half. Now, with enough money in his pocket to finance what was to come, he moved to Germany for a six-month intensive course in German, which prepared him for a two-year training in Waldorf Education at the Institute for Waldorf Pedagogy in Stuttgart, Germany.

Following his Waldorf training, Mr. Holdrege moved to Austria to join the high school of the Rudolf Steiner School in Vienna, at which he taught for seven years. Thereafter — for a further seven years — he became a full-time faculty member at the Institute for Goethean Studies (Goetheanisticsche Studientstaette) in Vienna. The Institute offers a 4-year training for sculptors and painters, and a 3 year full-time course for Waldorf teachers. During this period Mr. Holdrege also had the opportunity to serve as an adjunct faculty member for Waldorf Education at the University of Innsbruck. It was also in Vienna that Mr. Holdrege met his future spouse, Patricia Verene Favre. They later married in his parents' back yard in Boulder, Colorado. (Yes, Ms. Holdrege must be a very distant relative of Green Bay's favorite son, Brett, but no, daughter Laura has never followed her parents' repeated requests to take up tackle football.”

Any description of his Austrian years would not be complete without mention of the mountains, however. Although growing up at the foot of the Rockies, he only discovered what mountains “really have to offer” in Austria. Inspired by the mountaineering literature that crossed his path midway through his Vienna years, Mr. Holdrege took up rock climbing and mountaineering with a passion. Soon all his free time was spent in pursuit of glaciated peaks and rugged rock faces throughout Austria and Northern Italy. He ended up becoming certified as mountain guide for the Austrian Alpine Club, before a serious accident on a high mountain wall slowed him down, and contributed, lastly, to his return to America.

After 17 years in Europe, Mr. Holdrege returned to the United States in 1990 to work as 'Faculty Coordinator' of the Anthroposophical Society in America. During this period he served for several years as a visiting faculty member at Sunbridge College in Spring Valley, New York and at Rudolf Steiner College in Sacramento, and also taught courses on Waldorf Education at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and the Waldorf Institute of Southern California in Los Angeles. In 1994 he returned to full-time Waldorf teaching as one of the founding members of the Chicago Waldorf School's high school. Along the way, Mr. Holdrege also served for a year as program director of Sustain's Local Organic Initiative, and went back to school to earn an MS in nonprofit management and an MBA. If all goes according to schedule, he will be receiving an MA in ecology⁄environmental studies this December. Over the years, he has also served on many non-profit boards, and is currently vice president of the Board of Trustees at Michael Fields Agricultural Institute.

condolence card

Malcolm Edgerton Jr, grandfather of Ezra Edgerton (8), passed unexpectedly on May 12th. He was a gentle man and true philanthropist who worked actively in his native Stamford, CT. His interests had been in the arts, sailing and gardening and for more than 50 years he served as an active board member of the Stamford Museum and Nature Center — an institution of which his parents were co-founders. He was also involved in numerous foundations serving children, community and health and lived his life admirably in the spirit of Cui Servire Est Regnare (Whose service is perfect freedom). Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ciurej⁄Edgerton family.
