School Bulletin for the Week of May 9, 2007
may fair madness!!
It's almost here! May Fair is this weekend, Saturday, May 12th from 11:00am - 4:00pm! There's so much to do and look forward to!
Be sure to come early for the Drum Circle led by our own Hazel Lucchesi-Ginsberg. The Drum Circle will begin prior to the official opening of the Fair at 10:45am; all are invited to bring their instruments and join in. The ever popular Jeffrey the Great (aka Jeff Frederickson) will return with his magic show; he's performing first thing at 11:00am (as well as doing some street juggling during the Drum Circle) don't miss him! Angela Allyn will tell stories based on our recycling theme, the 3rd and 4th grades will be dancing around the Maypole at 1:00pm, the Morris Dancers, and Aimee Cousineau will sing children’s songs at 2:15pm. There will be the customary Flower Crowns, the Cake Walk, children's games and crafts (make a beautiful butterfly, beads from recycled catalogues, plant some seeds harvested from the Sophia Garden or build something amazing from ordinary household recyclables), jump rope making, delicious food, the Bakery, and tie-dye with Dru Muskovin. New this year, Susanne Zipperlen will have 'recycled' hand dyed eurythmy shoes for sale and Brian Gleichauf will have a display on a recycling theme. And, as always, we welcome our delightful vendors, Where else can you have this much fun?!
Of course, as we've said in previous Bulletins, please bake for the Fair (drop off to Main Lobby, Friday, May 11th or day of the Fair in the Bakery Tent or at the Cake Walk). And please feel welcome to join us for Flower Crown making in the lobby of the Auditorium on Friday, May 11th from drop-off to a little after pick-up. If you have questions about either of these, contact your room parents and/or check out the last two issues of the Bulletin.
Late Breaking News!! We are pleased to announce that the lot east of the school on Loyola will be available for parking as is the lot at Arthur and Glenwood. Overflow parking at Maloney's Funeral Home on Devon.
The Fair is open to everyone so do invite your friends and family it's a lovely opportunity to show off our school and just have a good time. We're all looking forward to having some fun together!

going to the dogs
This year the 6th grade had a business math block where we looked at the economy and the basics of running a business. To better explore running a business, we will be selling dog biscuits at the May Fair this year. The money we raise will go to an animal shelter. The biscuits we’re selling are homemade by the students. They come in two flavors peanut butter and cheese. Your dog will surely enjoy our treats! All biscuits have been tested on animals and humans. See you at the May Fair and bring your dogs!

star report
Did you send someone a star at the Holiday Fair? The money raised by this project went to support a variety of initiatives. One of those initiatives is the Globus Resource Center in Kokshetau, Kazakhstan. Globus is one of the organizations that Amanda Haase (CWS 1996) works with as a Peace Corps volunteer.
One of the more pressing needs is for books in English, especially those written for children. The $250 offered to Globus was used to meet this need. Because English books are simply unavailable in Kazakhstan, they requested that American books be sent to them. Amanda and Gulnara Alieva, director of Globus, compiled a list of books they thought the children would enjoy, including many familiar titles such as Spot Goes to the Farm, Dear Zoo, Frog and Toad Are Friends, Daniel's Duck, Robin Hood and Call It Courage. Ten copies of each of the books listed above are now on their way to Kokshetau and are expected to arrive sometime later this month.
The CWS current 7th grade class has been corresponding with Amanda and raised money last year to send art supplies to Chechen refugee children in Kazakhstan.
Globus is a school for 5 year olds through high school. Globus also assists those who need to pass the TOEFL test in order to attend university in the US. The Kazakhstan government provides many scholarships for students who wish to attend college here and then return to help their country develop.

you do the math!
Last week's problem was:
Find the sum of all integers (whole numbers) greater than twenty and less than one thousand whose number base five representation consists of all identical digits. Express your answer for the sum as a base ten numeral. (Hint: Recall Base-5 means that only the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 are used).
Because we're dealing with Base-5, we can only use the digits 0-4. Thus the numbers 20 base 10 = 40 base 5 and 1000 base 10 = 13000 base 5. So we need to find the following sum (Base-5):
44 + 111 + 222 + 333 + 444 + 1111 + 2222 + 3333 + 4444 + 11111.
I find it easier to convert each individual number to Base-10 and then add them up. Doing this gives us the sum
(Base-10):
24 + 31 + 62 + 93 + 124 + 156 + 312 + 468 + 624 + 781 = 2675.
Hopefully all of my arithmetic is correct. If you find an error, please let me know. No one submitted a correct answer so no
glory or honor can be awarded this week. I hope you enjoyed that problem; here is another:
Jane travels back and forth to work along the same 20 mile route every day. In the morning she hits traffic so her average speed is only 40 mph. On her way home she averages 60 mph. What is her average speed for the entire daily commute? (Hint: Be careful…)
Remember all answers should be submitted to Andrew Starzynski or Brian Gleichauf.
Enjoy!-Coach Starzynski

Similar to previous talks at the CWS, Judy will speak about the capacities that our children need to succeed in tomorrow's economy and the role of Waldorf education in the development of these capacities.
