Quotes

”...Waldorf education remains to become better known to Americans. Other independent educational movements, much less thoroughgoing in their attempts to integrate at every level of education art, science, and an appreciation of the fully human, have curiously been given much more attention. At a time of searching and reappraisal in American education, the Waldorf Movement with its unique understanding of the education of the child and its years of teaching practice and institutional experience deserves the informed consideration of those genuinely concerned with education and the development of human wholeness.”

holiday fair to do list

We all say it; the holidays seem to come quicker every year. Every year the holiday decorations are out earlier and earlier – now they come out before the Halloween candy is even off the shelves. We wonder how to balance the consumer aspects of the season with the spiritual, how we can honor the different ways we celebrate the holidays, about the best way to maintain some sense of rhythm and routine while allowing and adjusting for a certain amount of indulgence. The season brings sometimes great joy, sometimes sadness and, hopefully, profound reflection.

We approach the Holiday Fair this year with the high hopes that we can bring the light of the season to our community collectively and to each other individually. Each class working with the room parents or class coordinators will bring new ideas and excitement to the Holiday Fair, while honoring the old traditions. We hope to find ways to celebrate many of the different cultures of the season and our community. We hope to balance giving and receiving. By giving your time and effort to the Holiday Fair you are giving to your family and your community. In return you receive the wonder of the Children’s House, candle dipping, handmade crafts, Pocketman/Winter Fairy and the awe of seeing the school light up from the inside to the outside. The Holiday Fair will shine with your involvement, warmth and good old-fashioned fun.

To Do List:

• Order Greenery: See attached form.

• Donate to the Fair: Pocketman/Winter fairy items, working strands of lights, items for the raffle. Items can be left in the Front Office.

• Recycle: Do you have empty clear jars you can donate for a craft (from baby food size up to mayonnaise size would be appreciated.) They can be left in the Front Office.

Listen! Do you hear what we hear?? The whisper of Holiday Fair magic in the air!

(re-en)rolling along

The application deadline for new enrollment to CWS is December 1st. Before we extend offers to new applicants, we need to know how many openings we have. As you develop your plans for the 2008-2009 school year, please keep in mind the following:

• Early Childhood (EC) Re-enrollment: Returning EC families have been sent a form requesting the number and length of days for 2008-2009. The form is due back by December 1st. Please note that all kindergarten-aged children are required to attend 5 days (half or full). If you have any questions regarding the best schedule choice for your child, please speak with your child’s lead teacher.

• Grade School & High School Re-enrollment: Re-enrollment letters will be sent out before the Winter Break. Contracts will be sent out at the beginning of February and are due back with your deposit by Monday, March 7, 2008.

• 1st Grade Admissions: Applications will be sent to all EC families who have children eligible for 1st grade in 2008. All prospective 1st graders, including those currently enrolled in EC, need to submit applications by December 1st. Parent interviews will take place on February 1st and 2nd, with notification of acceptance status occurring in mid-February.

• 9th Grade Admissions: Applications are due by December 1st, and interviews will be held on February 1st and 2nd. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance status in mid-February.

• New Applications to CWS: Applications are due by December 1st although we accept applications throughout the year if space is available.

The next Open House is Sunday, January 13, 2008 and the next School Tour/Orientation is February 7, 2008. Please pass these dates on to any family members, friends or neighbors who may be interested in Waldorf education. Note that children who turn three by 10/31/08 are eligible for entry into the 3-4 year EC class.

season with thanks

Please bring food items to school for the Thanksgiving Food Drive. We are pleased to offer our support to the 550 people who are served by the Ignatian Services Food Pantry again this year.

Who uses the pantry? All different kinds of people from all different backgrounds from all around the world. Typically they are in families with four or five members and hail from Eastern Europe, Asia, South America, Central America and the US. Program Director Kathleen Morris suggests that the following items are most needed and useful:

• Veggie Soups (there are several vegetarians)

• Soy Milk

• Powdered Milk (no longer available from the government, and difficult to find at a good price)

• Peanut Butter

• Hot Cocoa Mix (a welcome treat for the winter holidays)

• Pancake Syrup

• Basic Cake, Pancake or other mixes (that require few ingredients to make)

• Frosting Mixes

• Cans of Tuna, Salmon and Chicken (pork is not as useful)

Please bring your donations to the table in the front lobby of the west wing. Your help with this important project is appreciated.

what we have in commons

Come to the Commons (in the canteen at the church) this Friday, November 16th, after drop-off to take a look at the little-known CWS parent library! Selections will be brought in for your perusing pleasure. If you see anything you like (and no doubt you will) the books are available to be checked out from the school library. There are titles by Rudolf Steiner, on parenting, and many other topics. There will also be coffee and tea.
