holiday fair wish list
Have you seen the Holiday Fair posters and postcards yet? If not you will want to stop by the Front Office and pick up a few. They are truly lovely, reflecting this year’s Holiday Fair theme “Festival of Lights” and our community invitation to a warm and festive Holiday Fair on December 1st.
Here is our Holiday Fair wish list and we are checking it twice; for those who are nice, stop by Tahirih Klass’ office for an official one-of-a-kind Holiday Fair button!
1st Grade is wishing for tissue wrapped pocketman/winterfairy natural items to be dropped off in the Front Office.
3rd Grade is wishing for wreath do-dads that can be dropped off in the Front Office.
4th Grade is wishing for jars of all sizes and shapes; as big as a baby food jar but no bigger than a mayonnaise size jar. Do you have a lantern from a past lantern walk you would be willing to share? If you put your name and child’s grade on it we will make every effort to return it after the Holiday Fair. Please drop them off in the Front Office.
6th Grade is wishing for donated raffle items to be left in the Front Office. They also want to encourage parents/students to sell the raffle tickets that came home on Monday.
All the Room Parents are wishing that parents will promptly fill Holiday Fair shifts. Remember all parents are strongly encouraged to work one 2 hour shift for the Holiday Fair.
I am thankful we have such a generous community!

dare to care
I invite you to look around you at how healthy our school has grown. We have: a growing student population, a beautiful garden, a cleaned up and repainted building, new windows in the grade school and high school, a thriving school store, a building that we now own, financial stability and a strong investment in the Rogers Park neighborhood. With all of these blessings at CWS, we now have the opportunity to take some time, open our windows and look beyond ourselves.
Across the world there are many Waldorf based or inspired groups who could use a hand as they build their programs. During the season of giving and light let us reach out and offer our support through the Care to Share Room at the Holiday Fair. Stop in and bring your address book so you can send a greeting with a window star anywhere in the world. There will also be many handmade treats both small and large for your shopping pleasure such as silks, origami lights, knitting bags, angels and more.
You can join with the 11th grade and help support a Waldorf high school student in South Africa reach his dreams of graduating and going to a University. Your dollars will help to support the programs at the Chengdu Waldorf School in China and the Early Intervention program at Esperanza here in Chicago. Please come check us out in the 5th grade classroom. If you have questions, ideas or handmade items that you would like to donate please call Dru Muskovin at 773.772.4005.

you do the math!
Our last problem was:
An 8-digit password contains upper case letters, lower case letters and numbers.
a. How many different passwords are possible?
Once again, our champion Simon Thompson answered correctly:
26 upper case letters, 26 lower case letters and 10 numbers gives me a total of 62 choices for the first digit. It also gives me 62 choices for each subsequent digit since repetition of digits is allowed. This gives me a grand total of 628 different possible passwords = 2.18×1014.
b. A computer can process 4,000,000 8-digit passwords per second. How long would it take for this computer to process all the passwords in part a?
2.18×1014 / 4,000,000 = 5.45×107 seconds. Or if I divide by (60×60 x 24) I get the answer of 631 days. Better get a faster computer!
If we had that new supercomputer that’s being installed at Argonne National Laboratory in the suburbs, we would be done in less than one second. Nice job, Simon!
The most secure passwords are the passwords that are random permutations of letters, numbers and symbols. Anytime someone attempts to crack a password, the words in the dictionary are used first. Clearly, the more digits in a password, the more secure the password is.
Hope you enjoyed that problem. Here is a problem straight from math club:
Problem #4:
Find all solutions to the problem
x240 – 409680 = 0.
All answers should be submitted to Andrew Starzynski, or you can put the answer in my box in the Main Office.
Good Luck!

We have a few more events this Winter and look forward to your continued involvement.
