Quotes

“I think that it is not exaggerated to say that no other educational system in the world gives such a central role to the arts as the Waldorf School Movement. There is not a subject taught that does not have an artistic aspect. Even mathematics is presented in an artistic fashion and related via dance, movement or drawing to the child as a whole. Steiner’s system of education is built on the premise that art is an integral part of human endeavors. He gives it back its true role. Anything that can be done to further his revolutionary educational ideals will be of the greatest importance.”

what is the annual fund?

As you all know, the Chicago Waldorf School is an independent school and operates without any financial support from federal or state governmental agencies. All independent schools rely upon tuition revenues and philanthropic gifts to meet operating expenses.

No independent school could charge the full cost of educating its students without pricing itself out of the market, so every independent school has an Annual Fund.

The Annual Fund is a yearly effort to help the school bridge the gap between tuition income and total operating expenses. About 70% of the funds raised help support salaries and benefits for the school's employees. The remainder helps support our programs, utilities, facilities, insurance, and maintenance costs.

The school has been the fortunate and grateful recipient of ever growing philanthropic support from our community of current parents, past parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, trustees and friends of the school who believe in our mission. We also have received matching gifts from corporations as well as support from some foundations where there is a direct personal relationship to the school.

Our Annual Fund will kick off in early November. Each of you will receive a letter asking you to consider making a contribution of a specific amount to the Annual Fund. You are the only one who knows what you are able to give; we only ask that each person gives to the best of their ability. If you have any questions about the Annual Fund, please contact me.

pockets full of holiday joy

Jingle…jingle…crinkle…joy!
The Pocket Man is here - oh boy!
Bells on his hat, treats in his pocket!
Is it a shell? A shiny new locket?
Perhaps a treasure to only me
Perhaps a treat only I can see.
It doesn-t matter, I love to find
Trinkets wrapped in paper and twine
In the big pockets that I can
Go through on the Pocket Man!

Light like a star, oh so merry!
It is! It is! It-s the Winter Fairy!
She laughs, she shines!
As she helps me to find
Her little gifts wrapped in paper and twine!
Her dress so glittery
It makes me jittery
With giggles and fun
This day that sparkles like the sun!

The Holiday Fair is Saturday, December 1st! Have you any miniature treasures to spare for our Pocket Man or Winter Fairy? Perhaps a marble or a shell or a wooden trinket? The 1st grade class is coordinating Pocket Man/Winter Fairy this year and is grateful for all donations. Please drop your items in the Treasure Basket in the Main Office. Tissue paper and thin ribbon needed too please!

you do the math!

Many apologies for the delay. We have had some difficulty with mathematical symbols in the various publishing formats used for the Bulletin. Here is the problem presented several weeks ago:

A cube with a volume of 8 is inscribed in a sphere. If I were the size of a point and I had an equal probability of appearing anywhere inside the sphere, what is the probability I would not appear in or on the cube?

This is a problem that has many steps. First we must find the volume of the sphere. To do this, we need the diameter of the sphere. A cube with a volume of 8 has sides of length 2 because 23=82. The length of the body diagonal of this cube is also the length of the diameter of the sphere. Using the Pythagorean Theorem twice, we find that this length is (Square Root of 12) or the product of 2 and (Square Root of 3). Using the formula for the volume of a sphere, 4/3(pi)(r3) we find that the volume of this sphere is about 21.7656. This means that the cube only occupies 36.75% of the sphere and thus the space outside of the cube is actually 1-.3675or 63.25% of the total space in the sphere. It seems like the cube would take up more space. Thus the probability that a point would appear outside of% the cube is 63.25% which is somewhat counter-intuitive.

John Trevillion correctly solved this problem. Simon Thompson have answered correctly if not for one small calculation error.

I hope you enjoyed that problem. Here is another:

A projectile is fired straight upward from ground level with an initial velocity of 384 feet per second. During what time period will its height exceed 2000 feet?

This position of this particular object is modeled by the equation s = -16t2 + 384t where s is the height in feet and t is the time in seconds.

Please submit answers to Andrew Starzynski or you can put the answer in my box in the Main Office.

Good Luck!

-Coach Starzynski

The girls grade school volleyball team traveled to Near North Montessori last Tuesday. The B team beat NNM 25-11 in the first game. However, without the 6th grade to provide some relief, the girls lost the next two games. The A team armed with solid skills — and a new attack strategy, including a setter — came off with a victory in two straight games! Our last home game of the regular season is this Thursday at 4:30pm and we host the league tournament this coming Friday and Saturday.

another coach's corner

Congratulations to the girls high school volleyball team for finishing third in the league standings, their highest finish to date earning them their first ever trophy for high school volleyball!

In case you missed it, last Monday, the girls went down to Young Women&#-30’s and, after a close first game of 28-16, they smashed them in the second game 25-7 and sent Young Women's to another loss.

On Wednesday, Cristo Rey came to our place. The girls kept trading points in the first game before finally falling 20-25. The girls put the pressure back onto Cristo Rey by continually hitting strong serves and key kills. The girls came out with a great victory, one of the most exciting and fun matches to watch, by winning the second game 25-20 and the third game 25-18. These last two victories sealed a third place finish for the girls.

With this momentum, our girls traveled to Cristo Rey for the league tournament last Friday and Saturday. In the first round of the tournament the girls played Young Women1s again. Everything that Waldorf hit over the net was dug by YW's and sent right back over. Our girls barely snuck through the first game by winning 25-23. In the second game our serving failed us and the continuing play of Young Women's lead to a loss, 18-25. The girls struggled through another tough game to squeak into the second round by winning 25-20.

In the second round on Saturday, the girls played Cristo Rey for the third time. After a split season series, the girls looked to upset them on their home court and head to the finals. Even with better play than on Friday, the girls could not overcome the serving of Cristo Rey, eventually falling 20-25, 18-25.

After this let down, the girls had to rally and play Providence St. Mel for third place. The girls showed no ill effects following their earlier loss and following the lead of Sanja Ramirez, the girls took the first game 25-19. They could not keep up the same pressure and fell in the second game, 20-25. They went on to a third game. With the game going up to 15, Olivia Ragan came up to serve with a 4-1 lead and fired off serve after serve. Olivia took the lead to 14-1 before they finally broke her serve. The girls finished them off on the next serve winning the game 15-2 leading to their first trophy! Great job to all the girls!

The middle school boys flag football won for the third time in a row by beating the British School 41-20. There were great plays by the entire team and the boys opened up 21-0. This game win left them in second place for the season with a 3-1 record. This week they will have played the first round of playoffs against the British School. If they can beat British School again they will be going to the finals next Tuesday.

Go Thunder!

condolence card

We extend our condolences to the Ramirez family on the loss of Susanne Ramirez-Maro, the mother of Nino Ramirez and grandmother of 6 current or former CWS students - Alexa, Nicolo, Benedikt, Sanja (11), Keira and Leander. Nino Ramirez says she was “…a writer and the perfect mother!! Throughout her life she put her children and her husband first. She was an inspiration for everybody - full of love for life, energy and enthusiasm. She had 4 boys (I am the oldest) and 9 grandchildren – 6 of them from us! She suffered from a brain tumor. Despite the devastating consequences of this disease, she never lost her humor and hope until the last minute. She was an amazing fighter, in a fight that can not be won” Mrs. Ramirez-Maro was 71. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Nino, wife Erika (who has been in Germany caring for Mrs. Ramirez-Maro during her illness) and their family.
