Quotes

“We shouldn’t ask: what does a person need to know or be able to do in order to fit into the existing social order? Instead we should ask: what lives in each human being and what can be developed in him or her? Only then will it be possible to direct the new qualities of each emerging generation into society. The society will become, what young people as whole human beings, make out of the existing social conditions. The new generation should not just be made to be what the present society wants it to become.”

School Bulletin for the week of September 26, 2007

michaelmas time!

Dear Parents and Friends:

This Friday after the Morning Lesson, all of the classes in grades 1-12 will be celebrating the fall festival of Michaelmas. Although this festival is not well known in our culture, it is an important festival in the life of our school, as it represents gathering strength and courage at a time when the outer forces of nature around us go to sleep. Waldorf schools not only around the country, but also around the world celebrate this festival and use the bold images of Micha-el slaying the dragon to represent the courage needed to overcome adversity and evil.

We will have several elements to our celebration this year, including: an assembly, community service in our neighborhood and the creation of colored-chalk murals done by mixed-grade classes on the sidewalks around the school. Please make sure to send your child in grubby clothes appropriate for hard work and messy artistic activities. Thanks!

The schedule for the day will be as follows:

• 8:00-10:00am – Main Lesson

• 10:00-10:30am – Snack/Recess

• 10:30am – Assemble in Auditorium (Introduction/Song)

• 10:45am – Noon – Community Clean Up

• BYO Lunch – (in the classrooms)

• 12:45-1:45pm – Create Sidewalk Murals

• 1:45-2:00pm – Viewing all Murals

• 2:15-3:00pm – Assemble in Auditorium

• Eurythmy, Song, Slide Show

• Clean-Up!

Parents are very welcome to attend the final assembly at the end of the day, where there will be a eurythmy performance by the 7th grade, some all-school singing, and a slide show from the days events! If parents are interested in supervising a class in the activities of the day, please contact your class teacher or room parent.

district news

Each month during the school year, the 24th District of the Chicago Police Department hosts a Principalís Meeting. I attend the meetings on behalf of our school. There are 35 schools in the 24th District and representatives from all schools come together along with Commander Bruce Rottner and CAPS Sergeant Robert Clark to discuss the state of the neighborhoods around our schools. The Commander lets us know about police concerns and we have an opportunity to share our concerns with the police and our colleagues.

This month, Commander Rottner unveiled a new School Violence/Safety Plan that has been developed that enhances the way in which the police will respond to a report of violent activity at any of our institutions. Each school has a Safe School Plan that is submitted to the police each year. The Safe School Plan includes: emergency contact information, building plans, utility shut off locations, etc. All squad cars have these plans in the cars at all times. We update our Safe School Plan each year and it is on file with the 24th District.

If you have questions or concerns that you would like to be certain are brought to the attention of the police, please let me know.

shoe in foot

The grade school faculty would like to remind parents, particularly of those in the younger grades, that it is very important that the children wear shoes that are appropriate for a wide variety of movement activities. Look for shoes that cover the toe and heel, fit firmly to the foot and provide plenty of support for running, jumping, etc. Shoes with too high a heel or overly chunky soles can contribute to falls and twisted ankles; foam-type clogs are also problematic for movement. Your cooperation is appreciated!

you do the math!

Due to public demand, the math problem of the week is back!

Last year we had people throughout our community answering these math problems. Hopefully this will continue. This is the problem I posted at the end of last year:

Problem #1: A cube with a volume of 8 is inscribed in a sphere. If I were the size of a point and I had an equal probability of appearing anywhere inside the sphere, what is the probability I would not appear in or on the cube?

All answers should be submitted to Coach Starzynski or you can put the answer in my box in the Main Office. Good luck!

college prep & college reps

Seniors – It is time to decide which Humanities and Math/Science teachers you would like to write letters of recommendation for your college admissions applications and then request that they write them. If anyone has questions about this process feel free to drop in, call 773.828.8468 or send me an e-mail.

I will be in Austin, TX from September 26 – 29 for the National Association for College Admission Counseling’s annual conference. I am particularly excited about the educational sessions offered – I look forward to bringing back the most up to date information and will gladly bend your ear upon my return!

You can find up to date college representative visits posted on my blog page on the CWS website. If you are the parent of a 12th grade student, encourage them to come! Even if it’s not a school they are interested in I think it is a great opportunity to ask questions and hear what other students are asking in a stress-free environment.

coach’s corner

Welcome to week 3 of the volleyball season. The high school girls had three league games this past week. They started the game off with a strong performance against Noble St. The girls got aggressive early and took control of the first game with some great team work. The Golden Tigers had no chance to get a rally going; our girls took the match in two straight games.

Providence St. Mel came to CWS on Friday looking for revenge after we beat them in their gym. Our girls put up a good fight but were unable to all come together and they went down in the first game 25-13. They were able to pull together in the second game but not enough to earn a win and they went down 25-18. PSM was able to split the season series 1-1.

The girls showed no lingering effects from Friday’s upset when Our Lady of Tepeyac came to our gym on Monday. Freshman server Laura Holdrege helped us come out fast in the first game by rattling off 5 straight points. Our Lady of Tepeyac didn’t know what hit them and Waldorf took the first game 25-10. Freshman Silvana Poole had a strong showing with a couple of great consistent serves.

In the second game, our girls struggled with their serves and unfortunately helped give Our Lady a lead of 20-15. Our girls continued to plug away and pushed to 25-25 before finally falling 26-28. CWS came out strong in the third game, with solid serving and hitting and put away Our Lady 25-13 to come away with a well deserved victory. With this last victory over Our Lady of Tepeyac it puts our league record at 3-2.

The middle school girls also played a few games last week. The team started by going to Ancona. It wasn’t a good day for them; they were unable to get anything started and lost to Ancona. They later hosted a game to rival Roycemore and were looking for revenge from an earlier loss. The girls picked up their game from the previous two, but still lost. However, the improvement of individual players on the team has been tremendous. Once the girls play more games together, they could be a team to be reckoned with.

Thanks to all the fans who have made it out to the games and supported the Thunder!
