American Sign Language (ASL)

$190.00

Students in grades 1–8 are invited to join our new American Sign Language class, beginning with a free sample class on March 11 (no registration required for the sample class). Open to both beginners and returning students, the class will introduce basic ASL vocabulary, syntax, elements of Deaf culture, and songs in a fun and engaging environment. Just as students learn Spanish and German at our school, students in the ASL will also acquire this language by playing games, hearing stories, and learning basic vocabulary. This class will be social AND informative!

This program will also function as a High School club, where high school students can participate at no cost while helping teach and mentor younger learners.

Dates: Wednesday March 11 (free sample), March 18, March 25, April 1, April 8, April 22, April 29, and May 6
Time: Wednesdays, 3:00pm-4:30pm
Ages: Grades 1-8

About the Instructors: Girma Grigley is a current 11th grade student at Chicago Waldorf High School. She learned and used American Sign Language before speaking since her father is deaf. Girma is enthusiastic to work with our students and teach them the beauty of the language and to educate them about deaf culture.

Andrea Shaffer is the Faculty Director at Chicago Waldorf School. She taught her last class ASL with the help of her friend, Matt Anderson. Ms. Shaffer grew up with a friend who was deaf, and who eventually became Miss Deaf America! She has always found it to be a beautiful language, and has found it helpful to know on many occasions.
